New Quilts & Teaching

TarnishFinal

There’s been a whirlwind of quilting going on around here. Cabin fever sure paid off this long, cold winter. Here are the two quilts I’ve completed so far this year. Ten of Cups (31″ x 40″) was created in response to the SAQA regional show Tarnish that I also co-chaired. The show runs through June 1st, 2014 at VisArts in Rockville, MD. Here is my artist statement:

I have always loved the patina of age, especially on metal. I will choose rust, verdigris and tarnish over shine any day. What’s wrong with showing your age? My art is driven by composition and storytelling. I use modern methods to bring the past into the present.

Technique: digital photography, wholecloth, machine quilted, custom cotton fabric (Spoonflower) from original photo of antique sterling baby cups.

Read & Reflect (24″ x 60″) has just been juried into the Dinner @ 8 show, Reflections, that Jamie Fingal and Leslie Tucker Jenison have organized and shown (thanks to Havel’s Sewing) at the International Quilt Market & Festival since 2009. I am honored to be one of the 33 artists selected for the show this year. (I’ll also be teaching several classes at the show all week, solo and with Jo Packham. Registration starts SOON!)

Statement: An empty chair is an invitation to sit and reflect. Plowing through my ever-growing stack of books on life and creativity, I realize that I am always reading, rarely reflecting. This is my reminder to stop and listen to what my heart has to say.

Machine piecing, raw edge machine and hand appliqué, TAP transfers from original digital photographs, machine quilting. Vintage and commercial cottons, hand painted canvas, TAP Transfer Artist Paper, KraftTex, gesso, pencil, Hobbs Heirloom wool batting.

To top off this quilty month, I’m teaching a live web seminar, “What it Takes to Teach – Quilting and More with Lesley Riley” hosted by Quiltmaker. I will help you combine your art skills, knowledge, personality, and style into classes that your students will love, recommend, and want more of. There will be plenty of time for questions! It’s May 28, 2014 at 1 PM EST. Click HERE for more details and to register.

Check back soon for my next post on what I experienced, learned and discovered on my personal retreat.
