Every mark tells a story. Whether done with a tight grip and repetitive nature, a line drawn in haste, or a smudge of color caught by chance—there is evidence of the artist’s hand. Mark-making becomes not just an act, but a way of listening, a conversation between self and surface where gesture transforms the ordinary into something imbued with deeper meaning.
In this workshop, we’ll explore the language of marks through mixed media and collage, utilizing tools crafted from found and natural materials gathered on location. We’ll splash, splatter, rust, and stain, allowing curiosity and intuition to guide the process.
This is an invitation to loosen the grip of perfection and find beauty at the intersection of happenstance and intention. We’ll bring our marks and materials together in a finished collage on canvas, carrying the design over the edges so the work feels continuous from every side. I’ll share techniques for attaching your handmade mark-making tools to the surface—should you wish to let them become part of the story.
You’ll leave with a meaningful work of art on canvas, several smaller collage works, an abundance of new materials and ideas, and a deeper connection to the moment where your hand, your story, and alchemy meet.

About Crystal
Crystal Marie considers herself to be “a material girl” when it comes to her art practice, which is rooted in collage. Evolving to include three-dimensional sculptures and assemblages, Crystal’s work speaks to both physical location and identity. Her process begins with an experimental approach, allowing what she’s brought to the table to inform her decisions as she builds layers of texture and meaning.
A Chicago based mid-career artist, Crystal Marie has one book published on the art of collage and is writing a second book about overcoming the blocks commonly
encountered in the studio. Crystal has exhibited her work in many fine art exhibitions and solo shows, earning her gallery representation and the coveted 2018 Racine Art Museum Artist Fellowship.
